Funerals

The sound of the bagpipe is probably most associated with funeral services and the song “Amazing Grace.” The bagpipe adds a solemn and dignified touch to the funeral ceremony and can communicate a sense of closure. There is no doubt that the mournful and soulful sounds of the bagpipe release the emotions that are held inside.

With the nature and timing of this type of service I can be available on short notice. I have played at a wide variety of memorials including church services, graveside ceremonies, wakes, and even at people’s homes.

Having done many memorial services I can offer several suggestions which can include:

  • Playing inside or outside the church as mourners arrive
  • Playing as the casket is being brought into the church
  • Playing during the memorial service
  • Playing as the casket is brought out of the church
  • Playing at the graveside as mourners arrive
  • Playing during the graveside ceremony
  • Playing at the end of the graveside ceremony as mourners leave

A nice touch to the beginning of the graveside ceremony is to have the bagpiper start at a distance away (even out of sight) and slowly march toward the gathering. At the conclusion of the ceremony it is also quite moving to have the bagpiper playing while slowly marching off into the distance. I can play many slow-airs and laments and you can listen to a few of them on my Music Samples page.

God Bless.

Jimmy,

I want to thank you and tell you what your playing did for the service of my husband.  This added so much and thank you for being there.

May God Bless you and yours.
Jannette Akin

Jimmy,

Thank you so much for making the day of celebration of our daughter’s life a special day.

Sincerely,
Paul and Claudia
